OK, let's admit it: back in 2001, Angelina Jolie made a pretty perfect Lara Croft in the original Tomb Raider movies. Those puckered lips, those arched brows, those almond eyes teeming with danger, the way a strand of black hair almost fell over them from her signature braid, not to mention the kind of bust-to-waist ratio you think can only exist in animated form… I could go on.
So when we found out that Alicia Vikander would be playing Lara Croft in the 2018 reboot of the franchise inspired by the popular video games series, we were a little skeptical. Not because she's isn't stunning and insanely talented, which of course she is, but because it's hard to imagine anyone replacing a role Angelina seemed born to play.
But, today, Warner Bros. released a teaser trailer ahead of the full trailer's debut tomorrow, and it proves Alicia will have no trouble giving Angelina a real run for her money.
The #TombRaider movie trailer drops tomorrow, in theaters March 2018. @tombraidermovie

I dig that the Tomb Raider movie poster includes that murderous spiky mountain climbing thing.

There's also a significant amount of confusion over what the hell is happening with her neck.
The more I look at the Tomb Raider movie poster the less sense that neck makes to me

Don't know what everyone's complaining about, Alicia Vikander's neck looks totally fine in that Tomb Raider poster.

It seems like it's a bit of a photoshop fail.
Also, cool that whoever photoshopped together the tomb raider poster has never seen a human neck in their life

And it's kind of terrifying.

Reptilian neck aside, photos released in March of the award-winning actress in full warrior mode made us optimistic about the reboot, which, unlike the Angelina Jolie version, will be an origin story. Set in London, this Lara Croft will be a 21-year-old bike courier who has no interest in taking over the business empire of her father, who disappeared when she was just a teen. Rebellious and independent, she decides to ignore his last wishes and travel to the place where he was last seen: a fabled tomb on a mythical island somewhere off the coast of Japan.

In July, Vikander herself said her portrayal will be a big departure from Jolie's cocky, self-assured version of the role:
"She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits," Vikander told EW, "but we've stripped away all of her experience. She hasn't gone on an adventure just yet. She thought he was a stuck up businessperson living in the modern youth culture of suburban London, but then this whole box of information. This is the beginning."
Tomb Raider hits theaters in March 2018.
